Welcome
The Route 26 community project has been running since 1989 and has charitable status. A voluntary management committee runs the scheme, with support from Gateshead Council in the form of a full time youth and community worker and several sessional workers.
The project has provided learning and voluntary opportunities for all ages and has groups running from parent and toddler to senior luncheon clubs. We share Elgin Centre with Deckham Sure Start, Gateshead Council and Cultural Services. We also work in partnership with local schools, police, local residence groups and other voluntary and statutory bodies.
Aims
We aim to improve the quality of life for residents and disadvantaged groups in the community, by enabling them to develop activities and programmes, for themselves and for their community.
This is achieved by:
- Working with young people to enhance their skills and provide issue based learning experiences.
- Providing an environment for local people to get active, fit and learn nutritional values.
Evidence of Need, Importance and Scale of Urgency
Deckham is high on the indices of deprivation and has a large number of lone parents and low-income families living in the area. The Government is currently pushing through the obesity agenda for adults and children. We have also been proactive on this matter by introducing a ‘Fit Families Course’, which educates adults in nutritional values and exercise. The sports development worker is putting together a programme, working with schools to look at ways of combating childhood obesity.
Future Plans
- Employing a part time sports development worker to plan and organise a wide range of children’s activities (age range 5-16yrs) tackling a number of health and social issues.
- Developing adult fitness sessions for all ages and abilities. The community sports development officer will work along side other professionals to establish a programme of combined sports, health and educational participation.
- Attracting new people into sport and physical activity, concentrating on people with disabilities and mental health problems, as well as younger and older people.
- Developing community use of facilities, providing organised sports and encouraging volunteering from members of the community.
- Enabling local people to take part in sports qualification and training, leading to involvement of volunteers, higher levels of training and employment opportunities.
- We also plan to target hard to reach people, for example those who misuse drugs and alcohol, single parents, low-income families and people with disabilities.
